Sounds for Pictures

Rafael DeSoto, Jr. / Comment on this

Whenever I'm working in my studio I like to listen to music. Something without too many lyrics. Something ambient yet interesting. It helps my mood and concentration. Music that I don't have to pay attention to - it's just there. Jazz is great if it's not too outside or edgy or abstract. Almost anything by Miles Davis and/or John Coltrane will do nicely. Reggae is also helpful (I like the old school style), Wailers, Burning Spear, Skatellites, Rico Rodrigues.

Here is a list of some music I like to paint by:

  • "Another Green World" Brian Eno
  • "Cluster & Eno" German electronic group Cluster and Brian Eno
  • "Windflower" Herb Ellis & Remo Palmer
  • "Ptah, the El Douad" Alice Coltrane
  • "Claire de Lune" Claude Debussy
  • "My Favorite Things" John Coltrane
  • "Gymnopedie No. 1" Erik Satie
  • "Feeling Blue" Paul Desmond
  • "Bach To The Blues" Ramsey Lewis Trio
  • "The Soulful Piano of Junior Mance"
  • "Kind of Blue" Miles Davis
  • "Pharoah" Pharoah Sanders
    "Blessed Relief" Frank Zappa
  • "Black Napkins" Frank Zappa
  • "Round Midnight" Thelonius Monk

What's some of your favorite music to work by?
